Around fifty vehicles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered numerous other marked vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials announced they were working "to unravel the case" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking official said the incident made him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a assailant targeting people of migrant background in five years prior.
